Emergency Assistance While Refuge Egypt’s mandate is to serve asylum seekers and refugees in every way possible, it is the provision of physical necessities – food, clothing, and shelter – that must come first before social, psychological, and spiritual needs can be met. As the other departments of Refuge Egypt work towards self sufficiency for individuals and families, our Emergency Department works with them to keep them nourished, clothed, and, if possible, housed. Refugees come to us through referral from other agencies or through word of mouth. Registration of Newcomers We register African refugees that have been in Egypt less than one year and who are either waiting for refugee status acceptance by the UNHCR, have been rejected or have had their file closed by the UNHCR. Registration is valid for two years and registered individuals and families are eligible for food assistance, clothing provisions, and emergency help during this time.
Providing Food Food bags are provided to families and individuals, pregnant ladies, parents of babies attending the Well Baby/Child Clinic, TB patients, the medically undernourished and AIDS patients.
Providing Clothing Clothing and blankets (in winter) are provided to those in need once a year. Many of the clothes are donated but we sometimes need to buy childrens’ clothing.
Emergency Cases Individual and families facing extreme difficulties come to our Emergency Department for assistance in the form of food, clothing, referral to other agencies, and/or referral to legal assistance. For many, a listening ear and a willingness to pray with them, when asked, can be a great comfort.
Refuge Egypt distributes more than 8,500 food packages each year and more than 1,600 clients benefit from clothing each year. [Back to Projects]
